Tyne salmon counts

There has been a significant increase in upstream counts at Riding Mill, on Saturday 21st 24 counts were recorded with smaller numbers moving over on the following days. The count for April to date is over 100, bringing the count for the year to date around 160.

River reports

The Nunwick waters on the North Tyne produced their first salmon of the season to the same rod, David landed a sea liced prime salmon weighing 16lb.

Elsewhere salmon have risen to the fly at Chesters with the occasional fish sighted in lower reaches in both the North and South Tynes.  Fresh spring salmon to 18lbs have been caught near Hexham.

Another fish was caught near Hexham last weekend although overall catches are low.

The river does not have to have huge stocks of salmon to give anglers a chance of a fish, springers are often very alert and good takers of the fly or lure.

High tides peak at 5.45 mtrs this week, there is an expectation the high tides will encourage fish to enter the system. A natural increase in flow would create ideal conditions, the weather forecast suggests this is unlikely.
