Tyne salmon counts

After a slow start, there has been an increase in activity over the counter at Riding Mill. Latest counts are not yet available however 59 fish were recorded up to the 5th April.  The slow start is linked to high flows and low water temperatures which have recently increased, therebye giving some optimism to upstream salmon fishers.

River reports

There have some good salmon reported from the Tynes, one of the more successful rods must be David Oakley from Hampshire who landed the first fish of this season from two different beats.

David caught the first fish of the season whilst fishing at Dilston, encouraged by the owner to fish the Top of Widehaugh David landed a beautiful spring salmon weighing 15lbs.

The Nunwick waters on the North Tyne produced their first salmon of the season to the same rod, David landed a sea liced prime salmon weighing 16lb.

Elsewhere salmon have risen to the fly at Chesters with the occasional fish sighted in lower reaches in both the North and South Tynes.  Fresh spring salmon to 18lbs have been caught near Hexham.

These are very encouraging reports, the river does not have to have huge stocks of salmon to give anglers a chance of a fish, springers are often very alert and good takers of the fly or lure.

The high tides peaked at 5.04 mtrs on Tuesday 11 April, with water temperatures above 9C more salmon should be encouraged to enter the Tyne system.

Westerly winds gusting to around 30 mph will be the dominant feature of the week ends weather, with some light rain forecast.
