River Tyne 21st September 2016

Kielder release

The current 9.3 cumec release finishes at 13.30 on Sunday, 25th September. A further 9.3 cumec release is proposed to start at 07:00 on Saturday, 1st October for three days (flow rate and duration subject to confirmation next week).

Hopefully the reservoir level should be sufficient to allow releases of at least 3 days at 9.3 cumecs starting on each of the 6th , 17th , 26th and 30th October. There was a drop in the release on Tuesday 20th, this lasted, a little over three hours.

Tyne salmon counts

The fish counter at Riding Mill recorded 2,398 for the month to date. This is well below the normal count for September, which is between 6 and 9,000.

Around 100 fish per day are travelling past Riding Mill.

The count for the year to date is 25,885 which is above average.

The fish counter revised figure for July is 9,919.

The Environment Agency has confirmed the total for June was 7,113, arecord count for the month since 1996 (when the counter was commissioned).

River reports

Natural river flows are lower than expected for this time of year, this combined with warm weather has had an adverse impact on recorded catches. Good numbers of fish are showing in all holding pools, however there are few eager takers. Many fish are showing some colour with a smaller number of fresh fish amongst them. Grilse as small as 2lb have been caught, these smaller fish fresh run. Some beats have enjoyed a good September to date, Chesters is one with 48 salmon and 6 sea trout for the month. This beat reported 65 salmon and 16 sea trout in August.

There is some limited availability at Chesters in October, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The weather is cooling with some rain forecast; hopefully this will bring the rivers in to good order and provide some decent fishing.
