Tyne salmon counts

The Riding Mill fish counter recorded 5465 upstream counts in August. Whilst this count is lower than average the seasonal count to date is well above average.

The seasonal count to date is 23,489.

This level of activity is reflected in upriver rod catches.

The fish counter revised figure for July is 9,919.

The Environment Agency has confirmed the total for June was 7,113, arecord count for the month since 1996 (when the counter was commissioned).

River reports

The natural river level has fallen, however a Kielder release is providing a good fishing height on both the North and Main Tyne. Current levels are; Alston 0.205 mtrs, Haltwhistle 0.37 mtrs, Reaverhill 0.786 mtrs, Rede Bridge 0.286 mtrs and Bywell gauge   is showing 0.683.

The number of fish counted at Riding Mill has fallen off a little, there is a view that those fish accessing the river are pushing on upstream. The catches, particularly those catches not widely reported seem to support that view.

Lambley on the South Tyne has already landed 63 fish this season despite been lightly fished. This is a good indication of the numbers of fish which have travelled quickly upstream. Lambley has rod vacancies, for details call 0796 727 4286.

This weekend spring tides will remain around the 5.0 mtrs mark until 6th September. A significant rainfall is forecast for the catchment on Saturday and into Sunday which could give rise to spates. River temperatures are about 15C, if temperatures fall and the right amount of rain, angling conditions could be good
