Kielder release

The Kielder release of 9.3 cumecs which will cease at 0.700 8th July when the release will reduce to 1.3 cumecs.  No further release is planned for week commencing 7th July. Tyne salmon counts

The Environment Agency has confirmed the total for June was 7,113, arecord count for the month since 1996 (when the counter was commissioned). The early July activity was high, possibly in excess of 2,500 up to the 5th. This gives a current stock of fish in the Tynes in excess of 10,000.

 River reports

Following recent rains the rivers rose to a near perfect height for fish migration, coinciding with spring tides and lower water temperatures, salmon and sea trout moved upstream throughout the system. Fish were soon in the upper reaches of the South Tyne, where some very clean salmon and sea trout were landed. North Tyne rods also enjoyed some good sport.

Chesters rods enjoyed a good week, Cris O’Gara caught a 12lb fish, Alan Musgrave caught 5 salmon to 12lb on Monday on a Copper Stinchar, Garry Vidler caught his first salmon in England, a 13 lb fish from the Boat Pool. Phil Robinson had a good outing, landing 3 salmon weighing 18, 18 and 20lb.

Down river on the Waters Meet, Graham Howse accounted for 3 salmon to 10lb in one day. Reeltime’s guest’s all caught salmon this week, Mike Parrish caught his first ever salmon on a FW Dart, very fresh, it weighed in at 15lb, Garry Vidler landed a fighting fit 11lb fish again on a Dart. Garry Allen caught his first ever salmon in the North Tyne pool at the Waters Meet, the fish ran down into the Junction before it was netted, earlier; Peter Taylor landed a liced 15lb salmon from the Junction. These salmon also took a FW Dart and were in excellent condition, some carrying lice.

Rods out on the South Tyne were soon among fish, some reported up to 3 salmon per day near Haltwhistle. Sea trout were caught in decent numbers, weights varied from 1.5 to 8lbs. Steady catches were made downriver, al rods remarking on the outstanding quality of the fish. Warden recorded 10 salmon and 13 seatrout with the best day reporting 5 salmon and 7 sea trout.

Hexham area saw plenty of salmon, with good numbers of sizeable fish to the rods. Styford accounted for 6 salmon and Bywell 7. The early July days saw good numbers of fish, salmon and sea trout going through Riding Mill, this is without doubt a splendid period to be out fishing on the Tyne. Hopefully there are more fish to come, hearsay has it, the salmon netsmen are doing quite well. More rain please, get out on the Tynes, enjoy your fishing.
