Tynes need RAIN
The Tynes desperately need a lot of rain, in fact the EA state the South Tyne is one of three rivers in England classified as exceptionally low. The North Tyne level has been supported by additional releases from Kielder reservoir , these releases encourage fish to leave the upper estuary and migrate upriver. Despite the high water temperatures and low natural flow, over 4,500 fish passed over the Environment Agency fish counter at Riding Mill so far this month , bringing the total count for 2018 to date to around 10,000. The great majority of fish are migrating overnight, if river temperatures continue to fall conditions for fish will improve.
Any salmon fishing at Chesters on the North Tyne booked through Reeltime Fishing for W/C 6th August will benefit Tyne Rivers Trust through a £5 donation. To book call 077537 29192
June River Report
The very dry month of May saw 616 upstream fish counts at Riding. In the low clear waters late smolt activity was apparent throughout the system. During this period of low flow and high water temperatures a small number of salmon mortalities were reported. Thankfully the storms over the weekend created a welcome increase in river levels, the Alston hydrograph makes interesting viewing as it shows a substantial vertical rise in a very short time, much of this spate came down the Blackburn from Hardside watershed.
As the waters cleared fish were seen accessing Hexham Bridge and my grandchildren enjoyed seeing running fish going through the Haydon Bridge footings on Sunday 3rd June. Riding Mill fish counter recorded 616 upstream counts for May. From the 1st to the 4th of June 532 upstream counts were recorded with over 180 counts in one day. Some travelling fish were seen near Haltwhistle and a clean 13lb salmon was caught a little further downstream.

A first time visitor to the Tyne
A first time visitor to the Tyne, Dave Hollingworth from the village of Hollingworth near Glossop enjoyed a great day with the fly. Following a little casting advice from Aidan Pollard , Dave was encouraged to cast at Waters Meet. Very soon Dave was into his first fish, which unfortunately swam free after 6 minutes in play. Recovering from his early disappointment Dave fished on and was soon rewarded with a hard fighting grilse which he safely landed. By now it is fair to say, a very enthusiastic angler covered the water, Dave’s first ever sea trout, a fish of 6lbs put up a good show before it was netted. The day got even better as Dave landed his first ever double figure fish of any species, a salmon of 11lbs. The following day fishing near Hexham, Dave landed another salmon again weighing 11lbs. Five fish in play in a 2 day visit to the Tyne with 4 landed is a good return by any standard, the fish were all hooked on a FW Black Dart, a fly which is becoming a very consistent taker of fish. Dave was initially the client of Reeltime and supported by Gavin Todd.

Fish Counter Update
The fish counter at Riding Mill recorded 5,222 upstream counts for August up to 7.30 on the 29th. This brings the count for year to date to 23,246. The current Kielder release is 12 cumecs, this release combined with fresh water in the system should encourage more fish to access the Tynes.

UPDATE
The Dunlops at Dilston
The Dynamic Duo, Adam and daughter Harriet Dunlop enjoyed some cracking sport in two evening visits to Dilston. Adam caught 4 salmon to 14 lb, on both point and dropper. Harriet caught her first salmon without her fathers help, when Adam, who was 300 yards away from Harriet, saw his daughter playing a fish he legged it downstream, arriving at the site in the same condition as the fish, well and truly played out! Harriet's fish weighed 14lb.
Top Day at Dilston
Alistair McEwan ably assisted by Gavin Todd enjoyed a cracking day at Dilston.
Alistair returned to his roots as a guest of Gavin Todd to fish Dilston, a water he had fished many times as a member of Corbridge Anglers. He hooked 4 salmon of which 3 were landed. The best fish both in condition and size was beautiful 13 pounder. Alistair fished with a size 12 Red Shrimp pattern in difficult low water conditions. A discrete approach to the water and local knowledge were key elements to the success of this wonderful day.

Waters Meet first salmon
Aidan Pollard lands 1st of the season
Aidan Pollard landed the first salmon of the season caught at Waters Meet. Amazingly the fish weighing 11lb was caught on the first cast of the short session on a FW Dart. The same fly was taken by another two salmon of which one was landed. Three salmon hooked in 1.5 hours, not bad going, as they say up here. Lots of fish showing as the South Tyne freshet cleared.

The river is the lowest I’ve seen it in a long time I haven't even seen any salmon running or in any of the pools yet but who cares when there are phenomenal wild brownies to be caught like this especially on a 5 weight! fish was around 16.5 inches ‪#‎cortland‪#‎masterlinewalker After worrying since last year that the huge floods had decimated everything the number of trout parr and smolts and flys were phenomenal!

Relaunch of TAP
Winner of BBC’s Earth Wildest Waters: The Big Fish, James Stokoe has joined forces with Tyne Rivers Trust to encourage those looking for a more wild fishing experience to try the Tyne Angling Passport (TAP).
James says: “This is a great way for people to spend quality time outdoors and experience the joys of wild trout fishing. There’s some really scenic locations included in the scheme and fishing for wild brown trout can be very rewarding. This is the ideal way for anybody who’s interested in fishing to give it a go or for experienced anglers to hone their skills.

The Chronicle report on wild brown trout venues
David Carrick Game Angling Correspondent for the Chronicle reported on wild brown trout venues which are included in the Tyne Angling Passport scheme run by the Tyne Rivers Trust. David comments; Along with river beats the wild reservoirs of Cow Green and Balderhead are involved in the scheme. They are both super wild brown trout venues. I fished both of them in recent weeks with eight lovely trout at Cow Green and 12 at Balberhead. Flies used were Black Pennell, Bibio, Kate McLaren and Loch Ordie
